‘Enjoying a good satisfying poo… I don’t know about you but like there’s this thing I used to talk about ‘Poo-foria’ where you do a good poo and you feel amazing and you know you’re like… right, ok, I’ve just evacuated well. Some say it stimulates the vagus nerve as well. And so I think yes ensuring that overall you are looking after your health, and you consider that an investment in yourself. Sometimes it does take time, it’s not a quick fix… that for me is self-love.’ Lynda Griparic

Lynda Griparic is a phenomenal Naturopath, Nutritionist, Podcaster, Writer, and Yoga teacher with over 20 years of experience in the health industry. Lynda specialises in digestive health, namely SIBO and constipation.

She has extensive experience in running healthy, effective, and sustainable bowel care programs and has expertise in investigating and treating the underlying causes of gut disturbance which leads to the power of ‘poo-topia’. Lynda has an intense interest in poo and she’s also the creator of the delicious BetterMe Tea, a tea designed to promote improved gut health and digestion – assisting those who struggle with constipation and sluggish bowel movements to go to the bathroom with ease.

Lynda is married to the amazing Guy Lawrence, she is a mum to 17 month old Ava and is keeping busy completing her bachelor of complementary medicine.

This is a beautiful conversation with a woman who is constantly aware of how much we have a bio directional relationship with our gut microbiome and how it is something that affects our mood, the thyroid, hormonal health and even the oral microbiome.

A naturopath is someone who looks at the wholistic picture of someone and see sall the symptoms they are experiencing and appreciates there can be many driving reasons as to why. Whilst doing that investigative work they are also trying to improve their symptoms immediately. Lynda is always looking at the chronic underlying issues vs the acute symptoms being presented.

We discuss the topic of nutrition being such a big and important part of our everyday health and wellbeing and yet how little it is regarded by the medical profession.

Lynda was drawn to naturopathy because it encompasses most things in someone’s life rather than just the acute symptoms. Humans are complex and looking at just the symptom is not enough in her opinion. Understanding what is driving the ailment is where longstanding results are had. Past trauma impacts symptom presentation in the body too. She has a love of medicine now and can see how she would love to study them both.

Naturopathy without doubt is a more natural approach and a do less harm approach as well as improving someone’s quality of life rather than just reduce the symptom. Sometimes we do need that approach like in emergency medicine and or pain.

She is inspired to plant seeds with people and see their overall joy for life improve.

We talk about pregnancy and the importance of nutrition and discuss what is behind the reason why some women struggle to keep food down! She says there is a natural body intelligence and yet some women are horrendously sick for the whole pregnancy even though it doesn’t make sense. She says some women may experience nausea but regardless, she says it is ideal to enter pregnancy as healthy as possible with optimum levels of nutrition.

Stress and the world we live in plays a big part in the impact of the gut lining and can drive gut disruption. The flow on effect can impact the immune system, brain health our hormonal health. Many stresses have increased in today’s world including demands, the environment, deficient soils etc.

Lynda gives a beautiful description of what leaky gut is. This is the intestinal permeability and particles can pass through the gut wall. This can cause systemic inflammation which can cause things like depression. Stress is a major factor, certain foods like a lot of saturated fats can impact the gut wall. Diet can cause intestinal dysbiosis or imbalance between good and bad bacteria. Of course gluten is a massive contributor as is alcohol, sugar and constipation which can lead to gut integrity, diverticulitis and things like refined foods and processed foods contribute to these issues.

Lynda knows we cannot live the ultimate perfect life and be completely no-tox but we can be mindful of our choices. The chemical load on our body can be very harmful even though we do have an amazing detoxification system. If we have an excess in anything in our body it can cause small problems that lead to long term and sometimes permanent problems.

One topic we go right into is POO! We talk diarrhoea, constipation and stool charts. Poo is insightful for health. Even down to how you evacuate your bowel. It should slide out easily with no sticky-ness. It should be well formed, s-shaped. You want to be going once a day and it feels complete. The way your bowel works is a fantastic indicator for health. And the poo itself can be very insightful. Is it diet, water intake, chemicals, movement or sedentary lifestyle and SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth). It is important to move the bowels everyday.

Sometimes there can be a disconnect to the human plumbing which is why Lynda wants to make it less taboo, have a giggle about it, talk about… and know no matter what is happening you are not alone.

You can get an image of the Bristol Stool Chart to stick on the back of the toilet door to teach everyone. There are 7 different types of stool representation. You want to be sitting at around type 3 and 4.

Lynda describes the importance of how quickly we pass food. Usually within an 18-24 hour period is ideal. If it is 5 days later it is a really slow transit time.

We talk enemas and colonics and how they each play a part. She does not recommend both often but does believe they have a place. From the mouth to the anus it is a hole.

Her definition of Self Love is enjoying a good satisfying poo – Poo-foria!!!! It stimulates the vagus nerve. Self love is investing in yourself to maintain your health. Self love is about bringing joy into your day and more connection, out in nature, is my life on a daily basis bringing in pleasure at some level. It’s about checking in with yourself daily. And making sure there is joy and pleasure.

Being married to Guy she says is perfect – and challenging at times… they constantly feel they are evolving together, and they encourage each other daily. Lynda loves her own podcast so she can direct her patients to each show. Guy and Lynda encourage each other to go beyond limitations. They each love what they do and feel blessed they can both work from home with Ava. They are continually asking each other how to bring more love into their lives.

(Guy is on the SL Podcast episode number 19).

Her final message is deeply reflect by asking yourself these questions daily – Am I bringing joy and pleasure into my life and if not what do I need to bring into my life to have that. Investing into your mental and physical health is so important and should be seen as a long term investment.

Her favourite quote is from Wayne Dyer:

You are not stuck where you are, unless you decide to be.
