Exercising on a regular basis seems to be one of life’s toughest challenges. Often the hardest part is getting started! It’s a challenge to make the time, get the shoes on and actually get out the door! But let’s face it once you are in the act of ‘doing exercise’ you feel better – virtuous almost! Perhaps then it is more a mental challenge than physical one? We all know emotional, mental and physical health are very strongly linked. With a healthy attitude and mastering positive self-talk you can overcome negative feelings often associated to exercise and work your way towards a healthier and fitter body.
Spring is the perfect time for a new exercise resolution! The weather is getting lighter and warmer and for many it is a time to make a fresh new start! It also means summer is just around the corner – which means beaches, bikinis and bodies! So how do we get up off our butts and into shape in time? The key is definitely enjoyment! Have you noticed when you say ‘walkies’ to a dog they almost jump out of their skin? They can’t wait to get out that door. I would be a multi-millionaire if I could come up with a magic potion that created the same reaction in human beings! It’s what I call getting a dose of ‘walk the dog attitude’. If only people could stop the excuses and just do it! But what works for some may not work for others, and if one day you feel great about exercising, chances are there will be some days you don’t. It is a challenge for many, but it one of the best investments into your health. The reality is there is no quick fix, it won’t happen on its own and no one can do it for you!
The human body is a machine that was designed to MOVE! No matter how good your diet is the muscles of your body need constant stimulus to maintain health and tone. Physical activity supports all your body functions – it strengthens your heart and lungs, builds strong healthy muscles and gives you that wonderful sense of well being as your brain releases ‘feel good’ endorphins each time you exercise. The topic of exercise is as big as nutrition. It can also be as confusing. We are all constantly bamboozled by the latest exercise gadget or fad. The exercise industry is as much a moneymaking phenomenon as the food one. So don’t get sucked in by marketing and advertising campaigns! At the end of the day it doesn’t matter how you move your body – as long as you are moving it!
It is so easy to make excuses not to exercise. Often there are many distractions and more important things that need our attention, it’s understandable all these excuses pop up. The reality is things will always pop up, and you will always be able to find a valid excuse – if you want to! In order to be healthy you need to commit to good eating and exercise habits, and make them a priority. Find ways of exercising that can easily be integrated into your busy life, make sure you enjoy doing it and stick with it until it becomes a way of life. Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well believe it or not, once you commit, it is that easy!
It takes at least 28days to create a positive habit. If you can make a promise to yourself and stick to the plan for the whole month chances are this will become a lifetime habit not just some fad! Make a plan and stick to it. Don’t allow any excuses for this period. You might decide to walk briskly for 30mins three times a week and attend yoga or a gym class twice a week. Or it might be swimming for 30mins three times a week and playing tennis twice a week. Whatever your plan is make sure it is something you would enjoy doing and then stick to it. Do not give up at all in this period.
Remember to take care of your body and reward it! (I don’t mean cake and chocolate either!) Stretching, warming up and down can help the body rejuvenate and protect from injury. Hot baths using magnesium or epsom salts and essential oils can also be fantastic. Lavender and Marjoram are great muscle relaxants, Peppermint and Chamomile are antispasmodic, Grapefruit and Black Pepper are detoxifying and oils like Geranium and Cedarwood are fantastic for balancing and grounding. Adding 6 drops in total of any of these oils to a full bath is a wonderful simple treatment! But before we seduce our senses into the relaxation side of things we need to get up off our butts and earn that treatment!
One point – if you have any health concerns, or have not exercised for a long time, we recommended a check up from your Doctor before embarking on any new exercise program. And if you are unsure where to start, walking is good! Or if you want something more than that invest into a personal trainer who can design a programme specifically for you. It will be money well spent! I personally love my trainer and going to train with her 3 x a week. Plus a few jogs a week and a nice long walk in nature or on the beach is heaven! Look at your house cleaning and gardening as workouts too.
Make getting fit and healthy your new Spring resolution! I am yet to meet anyone who has taken on regular exercise and regretted it!
Enjoy and take care!
