In this inspiring episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim Morrison chats with 19 year old rugby player Tilly Cason about resilience, identity and finding strength through adversity. Tilly shares her journey from discovering rugby at age 10 to playing for the Brisbane Broncos, including her transition from rugby union to league and the challenges of multiple ACL injuries and reconstructive surgeries. Together, Kim and Tilly explore the physical and mental demands of being a young female athlete, the importance of authenticity on social media, and how staying connected to the joy and freedom that first inspired you can help keep your passion alive through difficult times.
Tilly also opens up about the people who have helped shape her journey, including her parents, teammates, coaches and mentors, and the importance of having a strong support system without allowing pressure to take away the enjoyment of sport. This is a beautiful conversation about courage, perspective, gratitude and the power of believing that even the toughest moments are temporary.
About Tilly
At just 19 years old, Tilly has already experienced both the rewards of elite sport and the challenges that come with overcoming significant setbacks. A talented athlete from a young age, she began competing in sport at seven, excelling in track and field before finding her passion for rugby. Inspired by watching her brother play Rugby Union and the female athletes competing alongside him, Tilly began playing rugby with the boys at primary school when she was 11. Her talent quickly led to selection in the Queensland Academy of Sport Rugby Sevens program, where she continued to thrive.
At 16, Tilly transitioned to Rugby League and, after an impressive first season at club level, signed with the Brisbane Broncos. Soon after, she joined the Falcons Pathways Program, where she suffered her first major setback: an ACL rupture requiring reconstructive surgery.
After 14 months of rehabilitation, Tilly returned to the field only to re rupture the same ACL and tear her meniscus just eight minutes into her second game back. Another surgery and months of recovery followed, before a failed meniscus repair led to yet another setback. Today, she continues her recovery following further meniscus surgery.
Despite these challenges, Tilly’s story is not defined by injury but by resilience. Through every setback, she has relied on a positive mindset, self love, physical and mental strength, grit and determination. Her journey has given her a deep appreciation for holistic health, healing and personal growth, and she is passionate about sharing her story to inspire others to keep moving forward, no matter what obstacles they face.
Her definition of Self Love is: Be proud of who you are.
Her favourite quote/final message is: Create a life that you want to live. Just do what makes you happy.

Quotes:
I desired to be a part of such a cool sport, empowering sport that women weren’t really known for.
It was just something that was inside of me, just waiting to be found.
I wanted to build a pathway and connect with the younger girls to build that pathway for them.
It is just amazing that they are caring for us at the same time and putting their time in us to allow our female bodies to work to the best of its ability.
It is finding out what you truly love and what makes you happy.
For me, my way to be happy and feel good about myself, no matter what I am doing, is going for a walk and getting that sunlight.
Finding out what you love is a massive thing.
Once you find out what you love, you stick to that because you know that will make you happy and make you feel a certain way.
I want to create a realistic and authentic audience.
I am so unbelievably grateful for my surgeries, I am the young woman who I am today, which is bringing out my confidence and resilience in myself to be self independent.
I love being myself. I love being in my own body. I love the creativity. I love communicating. I love expressing who I am and my emotions.
Whatever your niche is, jump on your niche and be proud of it and stick to it.
I have the confidence in myself that I know I will bounce back and I know I will fight no matter what happens.
I am just going to keep going until I make it, whatever comes in the way, you just have build that confidence in yourself.
If you have that, then you are honestly unstoppable.
It isn’t weak to speak, and you should be opening up how your emotions are.
It is okay to tell someone how you are feeling and it is so important to reach out and express.
It is just a little hiccup along the way that has built me into a bigger and stronger woman I am.
If you are ever in doubt, or had a tough game, take yourself back to how you played or joined that first sport for the first time. And remember the fun you had playing it.
It is fun. It should be fun. You should be enjoying it.
Create the life that you want to live, because it is your life. You are the main character, you are the narrative.
Be yourself. Love yourself.
