In this inspiring conversation, Kim sits down with Katie Johnston to explore her remarkable journey of resilience, self discovery and self love. Katie opens up about her experiences with bullying, personal trauma and her time on Married at First Sight, sharing how these challenges shaped her approach to health and wellness. She discusses the philosophy behind her book Health Through Self Love and her belief that meaningful change comes from authenticity, compassion and taking small, consistent steps towards better physical and mental wellbeing.
Katie also shares how she has transformed her personal experiences into a platform for positive impact, from her social enterprise cafés and online community to her humanitarian work in Uganda. At the heart of the conversation is the 500 Mums initiative, supporting Serena and the 38 children in her care while working towards a sustainable future through education, land and income generating opportunities. Katie and Kim explore the power of self love, forgiveness and community, and how individual actions can create meaningful change far beyond ourselves.
About Katie:
Katie is the founder of It’s Wild Wellness, a shame-free wellness community built around the belief that taking care of yourself shouldn’t come from hating yourself first.
She is the author of Health Through Self Love and has a background in behavioural science, psychology, life coaching and remedial therapy, with a particular interest in the relationship between our psychology, biology, behaviour and physical health.
Katie’s own wellness story has been anything but linear. After years of navigating significant changes in her body, weight, health and relationship with herself, she began questioning the traditional idea that lasting change needs to be driven by discipline, restriction or dissatisfaction with who we are.
Instead, her work explores what can happen when self-love becomes the starting point rather than the finish line.
Through It’s Wild Wellness, Katie brings together evidence-based health information, psychology and real-life experience to help make wellness feel less overwhelming and more accessible — particularly for people who feel like they’re starting from scratch, starting again, or have spent years believing they’ve somehow failed at health.
At the heart of her approach is what she calls the Positive Upward Spiral: the idea that one small act of self-care can make the next positive choice a little easier, gradually creating momentum across our physical health, mental wellbeing and everyday life.
Katie is also known for sharing her life very openly — including her experience with body image, obesity, weight loss, strength training and appearing on Married at First Sight Australia — while challenging the shame and judgement that so often surround conversations about bodies and health.
Her message is simple: you don’t have to hate yourself into becoming healthier. You can care for the person you are today while still wanting more for yourself tomorrow.
Her definition of Self Love is: Self Love is one foot in front of the other. It is the little micro things. It is the consistency and practice of those. It is not big, grand goals and gestures and this and that. It is the little things that you do.
Her favourite quote is : Nothing is Perfect.

Quotes:
I always just felt like there was something a bit different about me. I was felt a bit more mature, a bit more insightful, I could see patterns and I could see things that other people couldn’t realise.
I stuffed a lot of emotions down. I didn’t reach out to anyone because I felt like every time that I was hurting, I was being ungrateful.
I learned to mask a lot of things. I learned to suppress a lot of things.
I am big on empathy but I am also equally big on boundaries.
It can be part of your story as a victim or it can be part of your story as a lesson.
It has been such a journey and it has been such a roller coaster and life constantly presents new lessons, new challenges and new things to make you more resilient.
It is the hardest things that have happened to me, that has helped me realise how strong I am.
I can walk forward, take one foot in front of the other and use it as evidence of my resilience or I will let it crush me.
Don’t shame yourself, don’t judge yourself, don’t knock yourself, don’t put yourself down. Don’t talk badly to yourself.
Just celebrate each time you take a step forward.
Life just wants me to be stronger.
I need to see strong women who can go through the fire and come out the other end stronger.
You can just be a normal person trying to be a good person in the world, doing the best you can, and that is more than enough.
Forgive, not yourself, forgive others for yourself. Free yourself from it.
Love yourself from the start. That is your starting block. And then everything that you add to it is little practises of self-love.
If I can do it and I can stand here as the strong, self-loving, healthy, independent woman that I am. Given where I have come from, then I sit here as an example of that.
We need to see people being raw and honest and real and not just pouting on Instagram for a selfie. We need authenticity.
If I can take up a bit of that space and provide that for people, then that is my legacy.
The concept of perfection is flawed
Nothing is perfect, nothing has to be perfect.
There is no end goals. It is just one foot in front of the other.
It is those tiny little nudges and practising and compounding over time that will take you to where you want to go.
