In this episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim interviews Krista Bleich about her memoir, The One Who Knows, and the midlife journey that inspired it. Krista shares her path from growing up in Wisconsin to running a bakery, navigating divorce and financial hardship and ultimately rebuilding her life and career with renewed purpose. She opens up about her long held desire to write a book, the vulnerability required to tell her story, how the writing process helped her find clarity, self trust, and her authentic voice. Together, they explore themes of self-love, reinvention, nervous system regulation, and the courage to start over later in life

About Krista
I am a lifelong seeker of self-discovery, which started with an underlying belief that there was more to life than I had been living. Countless self-development books, seminars, retreats – you name it, I did it. All in self-seeking.

My memoir is a story – the story of my desperate search for something outside myself to fill me up and make me feel whole and alive. Starting in my early childhood to my teens and early 20’s, I experienced life in ways that shaped me. I did the best that I could.

One thing I will say here is that there are so many books out there that are centred around abuse, cults, and addiction, etc. Where my story doesn’t necessarily grab someone in and pull them into the depths of “oh my gosh, what a terrible lived experience that was.”

My memoir, I feel, has more relatability in some regards. As in, I just did some stupid or different things that seemed at the time the best decision I could have made given the circumstances.

And then at the same time, the Universe or God or whatever you want to name it, played its role as well. I was open enough to see what was put in front of me and take the leap.

So the book – my life story up to my mid 50’s is the journey. The ‘normal life journey’ of a woman who learned to trust in herself.

In my late 20’s, I entered an inpatient centre for 3 weeks, dealing with depression. I met the man within those walls, whom I married later that year. I thought I was saved and the fairy tale had happened, only to have a tremendous amount of disillusionment with what I had gotten myself into.

From there, I started, ran, and managed a successful business, had 4 children, and what followed was divorce and bankruptcy.

What also transpired was a rediscovery of who I am and the knowing that I have had for myself all along. I just needed to trust that.

Her definition of Self Love is: Respecting myself and not judging what brings me happiness and joy. Doing what brings me joy, even if it is simple.

Her favourite quote is from: Mariane Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’

Quotes:
I always remember having an adventurous spirit as a kid.
I always wanted to explore more, be more and experience more.
I had this underlying sense there was more to life than what was happening on the surface.
It was a sense of something pulling me that wanted to be expressed or experienced.
I knew enough to just take the next logical step.
I knew back then I wanted to write something. The story wasn’t finished yet. There was more living that I had to do.
Everybody does have stories, but I wanted it to have some kind of message.
I tried one thing, and that didn’t work, and then I tried another thing. It taught me something more about myself.
I was really creating more and more of a monster that I had to keep feeding. I didn’t realise I was the problem.
I was trying to fill a hole that really couldn’t be filled.
I needed that space in order to really see who I was.
The other things will come when it is ready, but you can’t rush that.
Give yourself the time to find you again
I really don’t think that you really grow up until you have maturity and experiences.
Life teaches you something about who you are.
I think we really start growing up when we are over 50.
I found a career that actually fulfilled me in a completely different way. It wasn’t just a job anymore. It was a career.
My experience and my life experience had value.
I finally felt like my life was full.
I am still evolving.
It feels like the beginning of my life now.
I am open to what else might come.
Anybody who has been searching for themselves will see a part of themselves in my story.
