In this episode of the Self Love Podcast, Kim chats with Zak Dunbar, the founder of Moveera, a free fitness and wellness event platform designed to bring people together through real life experiences. Zak shares his journey from growing up on the Sunshine Coast and stepping away from university to travelling solo through Europe and discovering the courage to build a business on his own terms. Inspired by a desire to create meaningful connections beyond the digital world, Zak developed Moveera to help people discover local activities, meet like minded people and get moving through experiences such as running clubs, hikes, picnics and other wellness events.
Together, Kim and Zak explore the impact of social media and screen time on our wellbeing, the growing role of AI in our lives, and why genuine human connection and time in nature are more important than ever. They also discuss encouraging young people to try new things, build confidence, step outside their comfort zones and develop healthy boundaries with technology. Zak shares his refreshing perspective on self love and having the passion to try anything and the confidence to trust yourself. A conversation full of inspiration for anyone looking to live more intentionally, reconnect with their community and embrace a healthier, more connected way of life.
About Zak
A Sunshine Coast local since 2008, Zak Dunbar grew up in the region and attended Matthew Flinders Anglican College from kindergarten right through to Year 12.
After finishing school, Zak wasn't entirely sure which direction he wanted to take, so he followed his interest in money and finance, spending two years working in the industry while studying at university.
As his career progressed, Zak began to question whether traditional education was keeping pace with the rapidly changing world. He eventually made the decision to leave university and pursue a different path.
Following a six-week adventure through Europe, Zak returned home in May 2025 with a clear commitment to himself: he wasn't going back to the traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle.
Since then, Zak has embraced entrepreneurship and self-employment. He is currently building Moveera, a fitness and wellness events app and platform designed to bring people together through movement, while also developing several other exciting app projects.
Outside of business, Zak is passionate about calisthenics, spending time outdoors and bringing people together through organised hikes and shared experiences.
Despite his entrepreneurial ambitions, Zak believes there is real happiness to be found in simplicity, consistency and daily routines. For him, it's not about constantly chasing the next big thing, but creating a life built around movement, meaningful connections, freedom and doing what he loves.
His definition of Self Love: Passion to try anything and everything and to throw themselves into new situations.
His favourite quote is: Who you know, not what you know.

Quotes:
I didn’t really fit into school. I wasn’t the one who enjoyed school that much.
Getting outdoors was important to me and shaped me into the way I am today.
I led myself into finance because I loved money. I was interested on how I could make money work for me and investing.
I was lost. Like many people.
Challenging yourself and giving yourself the opportunity to fall into a situation where you are forced to find a way to make it work. It always works out.
As long as you talk to people and get yourself involved in new situations, you are always going to figure something out and things will happen for you.
You can prime your luck and you can make your luck work for you.
People need less screen and more green.
You have got to work for it. It doesn’t happen overnight.
We are so connected but we are so disconnected at the same time as a society.
Having that human connection is such an important thing for people.
Once you experience it, I think you realise how good it is.
The real goal of it was just to make it easier for people. I noticed there was a gap. I noticed hosts were not able to host these events as easy as they should be able to.
Put yourself out there, have those conversations with people and at the end of the day, connect with people.
I live by talking to people and reaching out, even just phone calls.
I learned more in 2 years in that finance job that I would have learned from a master’s degree.
To young people, I would say try new things and put yourself in difficult situations and talk to as many people as you can. I think that is important.
To parents, as long as you have got good values, trust the process.
I just accept things for what they are. And if you can’t change it, then it is obviously meant to be that way.
Confidence is huge for me. I hold myself by that to have confidence in everything you do.
If it makes me feel good. I am going to keep doing it
We need to lead with more kindness from the perspective of not knowing what someone is going through.
Number one, your phone shouldn’t be the last thing you see when you go to sleep, and it shouldn’t be the 1st thing you see when you wake up in the morning
