RMP 35: Kale Brock on the Gut Movie and the Importance of Gut Health
16, Feb, 2018
This week’s guest is Kale Brock. Kale’s work involves communicating health and wellness, especially the area of gut health, in a fun, light-hearted, approachable and easy to understand way. Gut health is a hot topic within the health space and we now know that most, if not all, health complaints we see today, are related to gut health and the state of our microbiome…. the trillions of microorganisms that reside within us and on us, and play an important role in our physiology and health.
Could “poo” be the future of medicine?? Is there an “optimal” microbiome? In the Gut Movie, Kale sets out to answer these questions by travelling to Namibia in Southern Africa to live with a hunter-gatherer tribe, the San tribe, who are still living their traditional lifestyle within their natural environment. Kale monitors his own microbiome during his week long stay with the San, living as they live, as well as the microbiome of some of the San tribesman. Some significant findings came as a result of testing samples upon returning home to Australia.
Here’s what we discussed:
• The Microbiome and gut health
• Missing microbes and factors that affect our internal ecosystem
• The Gut Movie
• Kale’s experience living with the San hunter gatherer tribe in Namibia
• The microbiome differences of these traditional hunter gatherers compared to a western person’s microbiome
• Fecal Microbiota Transplants and how “poo” may be the future of medicine
• The importance of tribe and community for health
• Lots more!
